  1. Can my child just swim with Thornlie Swimming Club or should they also have swimming lessons/sqad as well?

Thornlie Swimming Club accepts children of all levels and competencies. We do not stipulate that they should also be training. However  lessons are a great way for a swimming coach or lesson instructor to teach swimmers the proper skills they need. Lessons are a great way to help swimmers individually on certain areas of their strokes, starts and turns. Thornlie Swimming club is a great way to swim competitively with other swimmers their own age and practicing their skills together with the notion of having fun at the same time. Thornlie Swimming Club is an open club. This means we accept swimmers from any swim school or coach.

We recommend everyone needs lessons but it is not compulsory. Some of the best swimmers in the world need proper guidance with their strokes, starts and turns. We accept swimmers from any Swim School or coach.

  5. What skill level do I need to be at to participate at Thornlie Swim Club?

Swimmers have to be able to swim 3 different strokes in at least 25m (that is 1 length of the pool at Gosnells Leisure World). If your child is already doing swimming lessons that means they should be at about Level 5 in classes. Each of their swims is timed and as they get better they can progress through to the longer swims.

  6. What events do you swim each week?

Each week we have a choice of 10 races catering for the younger child who can only swim 25m to the more advanced swimmer who wants to challenge themselves with a harder swim such as the 200m IM. Swimmers can choose 3 swims each week from the selection. The order of events can be very confusing, but the Marshall is responsible for gathering the swimmers before their events, but it is the swimmers responsibility to ensure that they do not miss their race.

  7. Is there any particular order to the events?

Yes, the evening is run in order of the swim programme for that week. Sometimes we amalgamate events to make the night run more smoothly. It is important that swimmers are aware of the swim program and which swims thay have chosen and listen to the marshaler who will endeavor to ensure all swimmers are marshaled prior to there race.

  8. What are the kids doing at the meets?

We ask that the swimmers from Thornlie Swim Club sit together, preferably near the Marshalling people, for the entire swim meet. Please make sure that the swimmers can be found prior to the events that they have signed up for. Swimmers are not allowed to swim in the Leisure area of the pool for safety reasons.

  9. Who decides what events they are going to compete in?

You and your child can choose which swims to compete in each week at the Recorders desk (computer people) depending on the Swim programme for that week. If you have a coach they might recommend your child concentrates on a particular swim. The recorders will advise you if you are too fast for a swim eg. if your child can swim 25m freestyle in less than 30 seconds then they should be swimming this stroke at 50m. The program will be printed out for each meet prior to the meet starting, this allows all swimmers to see where they are racing and when to be ready.

  10. How many approximate events will each child compete in?

Swimmers may swim in up to 3 individual events each week. They can however choose to swim less than 3 but if this is the case they will not accumulate any points for that week..

  11. What ages or skills levels are required to do swimming lessons?

Anyone can have swimming lessons regardless of their skill, from beginners to competant swimmers. Everyone can improve on their technique and speed. Gosnells Leisure World offers a variety of programmes ranging from babies to adults, half hour lessons to one and a half hour squad training. If you prefer to use other coaches that are available in the area we can give advise on that as well.
