Blair caps off stellar year with top honour at Swimming Awards
Sat, 18 Jun 2011

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Blair Evans has topped off a sensational 2010/2011 swimming season by claiming the 2011 Vorgee WA Swimmer of the Year award at this morning’s awards event.

Blair’s gold medal performance as a member of the women’s 4 x 200m relay team at last year’s Delhi Games, as well as an individual silver and two bronze at the 2010 Pan Pacs, cemented her position as Western Australia’s top swimmer ahead of fellow nominees Rhys Mainstone and Tommaso D’Orsogna.

Blair said it was an honour to win the award for the first time and a highlight in what has been an incredible an journey.

“The last three years have been amazing, just going from meet to meet, and to be able to top it off with this award is a real thrill,” Blair said.

“Obviously the Commonwealth Games last year were a highlight for me, and I’m looking forward to training hard and hopefully getting a place on the Australian team for next year’s Olympic Games.”

Swimming WA Executive Director Simon Taylor said the last 12 months had been outstanding for the sport of swimming in WA, in particular the performances of the State’s elite athletes on the national and international stage.

“With 6 WA swimmers currently on the Australian Swimming Team, there’s no doubt that, as a state, we’re punching well above our weight,” Mr Taylor said.

“It’s great to get together as sport and recognise our achievements, but with so many great athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers, it’s impossible to recognise them all.”

In the other major awards categories, Adelaide Hart took out Age Swimmer of the Year after smashing 43 records at the 2011 State Age Championships, while Rhys Mainstone’s silver medal performance at this year’s Australian Open Water Championships secured him the Open Water Swimmer of the Year Award.

Member of the Australian Para Pan Pacs team Katrina Porter took out Multi Class Swimmer of the Year, while 12 year old Amy Williams claimed Junior Swimmer of the Year.

A full list of winners will be available on the Swimming WA website on monday 20th June.

WA Secures Australian Open Water Champs
Fri, 10 Jun 2011

Western Australia will host the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships in the lead up to next year’s London Olympic Games following a successful bid for the event by Swimming WA.

Swimming Australia announced today that the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre in Armadale, Perth will host the championship event in February (17-19), which will see Australia’s top open water swimmers compete in the lead up to London.

Perth swimmer and 2010 Australian Open Water Champion Rhys Mainstone said he was relishing the opportunity to swim in front of a home crowd.

“After missing out on gold at this year’s event, it will be great to have a home crowd spurring me on as I have a crack at reclaiming my title,” Rhys said.

“This is a great outcome for our sport in WA, especially for our open water swimmers.”

Swimming WA Executive Director Simon Taylor said the announcement was further evidence of the strong support for open water swimming in WA and would compliment Swimming WA’s 2011-2012 Open Water Series.

“Last month we welcomed the announcement that Perth will host the 2012 Australian Short Course Championships - now WA gets to boast hosting two National events in one year,” Mr Taylor said.

“The sport of swimming in Western Australia is going from strength to strength, and we welcome the opportunity to host these pinnacle events in our home state.”

Swimming Australia Open Water Head Coach Greg Towle says the facilities in Perth should produce some quality racing in what will be an important Australian Championships at both the senior and junior level.

“From a senior perspective, the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships will be an important part of the build up for the Olympic Games later in the year, providing athletes with quality competition ahead of the 10km Open Water Swim to be held in Hyde Park,” said Towle.

“At a junior level, now is when we also start looking towards Rio and identifying talent to develop over the next four years, which means there will be plenty of opportunities for some new names to make their mark in Australian open water swimming.”

The 2011 Australian Open Water Championships held in Sydney in March attracted 332 of Australia’s top swimmers from 116 clubs.

The 2012 event will run from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 February 2012.

London?s heroes to return to action in WA
Mon, 23 May 2011

Western Australia will host the 2012 Australian Short Course Championships - the first national event following the London Olympic Games.

The announcement was made today by Swimming Australia as part of the 2012-2013 national swimming calendar of events.

Swimming WA Executive Director Simon Taylor said the announcement was a great result for the WA swimming community and testament to the strength of the sport in Western Australia.

?The Australian Short Course Championships will host some of the biggest names in swimming and will be a great boost to the profile of our sport in WA,? Taylor said.

?Off the back of the 2012 Olympic Games, this event will be a great opportunity for West Australian?s to come face to face with their Olympic heroes.?

Taylor said today?s announcement was a result of continued support from Swimming WA?s partners in VenuesWest and Eventscorp.

Eventscorp Executive Director David van Ooran said it was very pleasing to see such a prestigious national swimming event added to WA?s expanding sporting calendar next year.

?WA has a rich history of hosting world class swimming meets, and it will be exciting to see Australia?s best competitors back in Perth for the 2012 National Short Course Championships,? Mr van Ooran said.

?Eventscorp is proud to have partnered with Swimming WA and VenuesWest  to secure this event for Perth.?

VenuesWest Chairman Graham Partridge sent his congratulations to Swimming WA for the huge amount of work that went into this successful bid.

?We were delighted to be able to contribute to the bid and we thank Swimming WA for the opportunity to host such an important swimming event at one of our venues,? he said.

Nederpelt takes out Dash for Cash at Fran Crippen Memorial Swim in Florida
Mon, 9 May 2011

WA swimmers have made a strong showing over the weekend at this year’s  Fran Crippen Memorial Swim at Ft Lauderdale in the US.

Set up to honour the late Crippen who tragically passed away during an open water swim in the UAE in October last year, the event brought out some outstanding performances from Australia’s swimmers, in particular the boys from WA.

In the dash for cash over one mile, dual Olympian and WA swimmer Travis Nederpelt was too good for Peter Vanderkay and Connor Meyer of the USA while Simon Huitenga from City of Perth finished fourth.

Both Nederpelt and Huitenga started the race strong but were quickly joined by the two USA swimmers. The pack of four eventually broke away and created their own race, battling all the way to the line.

In the 10km Marathon, WA’s Rhys Mainstone led a strong field through most of the race yet it was USA who went 1,2,3 with Australia's Ky Hurst finishing 4th and Mainstone a few strokes off the pace in 7th.

In the women’s event it was Australia’s Melissa Gorman who took line honours ahead of a pack of five USA swimmers.

WA stand outs at Telstra Australian Swimming Championships
Fri, 8 Apr 2011

In what has been an outstanding week for Australian swimming, WA's swimmers ensured their presence was noticed both in and out of the pool.

On the final night of the 2011 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships, Blair Evans claimed bronze in the final of the 400m individual medley while Bobby Jovanovich, Travis Nederpelt and Medeleine Scott all had strong swims in their finals events.

Out of the water WA was equally as dominant, with the travelling supporter base making more noise than any other state in the grand stands.

Swimming WA congratulates all of our swimmers that competed throughout the competition, and we look forward to seeing you all back in the water during the 2011 Short Course season.
